The new 2017 Kia Soul is a great choice for an urban commuter looking for an extensive feature list, fun-to-drive attitude, funky styling, and a wagon-based functionality. Other highlights include excellent crash test scores, loads of available features, a long warranty, user-friendly controls, and plenty of passenger and cargo space. Its release date should be expected sometime in the middle of next year, if online rumors are anything to go by.
A death knell for tall, boxy wagons has already been sounded due to the meteoric rise of compact and subcompact crossovers. The new model is now the hyped up version of the dearly departed Nissan Cube and Scion xB and is their official squared torch bearer. The Soul offers a personality and styling that very few cars in those categories an match, as it’s a funky car that combines both the qualities of a compact crossover and those of a tall hatchback.
It is immensely practical and its boxy design affords it more usable space than some small crossovers and hatchbacks. The interior space is voluptuous and even the backseat occupants will find both the head- and leg room ample. Further aback, the cargo space may seem modest but this can be solved by folding the rear seats, which almost triples the volume.
There are plenty of standard and optional features available for the Soul, however, the latter can impact immensely on it price tag especially if you opt for the ventilated and heated front seats, and premium leather upholstery.
Foibles do exist on the 2017 Kia Soul. They include the unexceptional fuel economy ratings that come in somewhere between the compact and subcompact crossovers. The models equipped with 18” wheels have the possibilities of impacting negatively on the ride quality, and, last but not least, is the invasive road noise at speed due to its boxy shape.
