2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster in Planning

A bit of a surprising entry on the market is the potential appearance of the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster. There were some discussions made about this model appearing but it was not really clear if it would make it on the stage or not. The prospect of it sounds good and for now there are only the renderings offered and a whole lot of rumors about this model.

The AMG GT model was unveiled just a few years ago and was meant to act as a substitute to the SLS AMG which appeared before it. The model appeared in 2014 and was seen in Paris for the first time which afterwards spawned three more variants of the AMG GT. These include the GT S Roadster, the convertible version and the GT R model. What would be a more obvious step for the upcoming models is the GT C car, which is surely in plans, but also the AMG GT R Roadster was next in their plans.

The possibility of this car is still being discussed and we have not officially been given a statement or a confirmation about this car. But these things often start like this and reach production unexpectedly. If they are trying to keep things down, they are doing a great job but it would take a lot more to surprise the public. Either way getting a 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster is what we want so let see what are the possibilities about getting this car.

When would the Release Date be?

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster is not going to be expected soon. In fact there are already other projects which have been formed and which Mercedes is going to concentrate first on. After all of this is done and the planned vehicles are released then we can look forward to seeing the AMG GT R Roadster. But this may shift the vehicle to appear as far as the later part of 2019.

There are no talks about the price of the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster, but you can bet it will be a pricey entry. The base coupe version is being sold in Europe for €165,410, which would amount to somewhere around $178,000 in America. The possible price of the R Roadster is thus going to go up to somewhere around $195,000, which would be a price that other rivaling cars are being sold for.

2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster Exterior Look

As it is always the case with coupe turn roadsters, so will the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster have the same design from the waistline and down. So the front end of the car will have the familiar grille with the Mercedes badge on it and also have the lower spoiler and a smaller spoiler below it. The air vents are bigger and the slats have a horizontal pattern making the car look meaner. The headlights are completely carried over.

The side of the car sees a complete crossover from the waist and below, but the upper part will of course be changed. It is not merely removing the roof and finishing with that, there are more modifications which are done here. One of them is making the windshield larger and the A-pillars should change the position in order to be more aerodynamic. The quarter glass should be bigger and roll bars are placed behind the back seats. The rear end will need to provide some stronger lines which would give the roadster a bolder look and there are going to be some very unique body lines made here. The spoiler and everything from the taillights down is going to be carried over.

Interior Appearance and Possible Changes

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster will probably not get a surprisingly different design compared to what we are used to seeing. Mercedes does not really employ so much when redesigning the version of the car so the GT R Roadster will probably get a very familiar design. This would only mean that the car needs to add roll bars for protection and include the bucket seats with contrast stitching. Of course you may have already guessed it by yourself but the car will offer exceptional headroom. A flat bottom steering wheel is also expected and will be probably covered with the same leather materials as the seats are and perhaps include the same stitching.

The Drivetrain

It might not come as a surprise that the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster will be probably powered by the same Biturbo, 4.0 liter V-8 engine as seen in the rest of the lineup. But this one would need to provide a staggering output of 577 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of twist. This is being done with a number of updates the car will incorporate and it will make it have 74 more horsepower and added 35 pounds of torque compared to the GT S version.

2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster 0-60 mph and Top Speed

Due to the missing roof, the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster is going to be just a bit slower compared to the version with the roof. It is going to bring the acceleration down to 3.6 seconds which is only 0.1 seconds slower than the coupe version. But the top speed is not going to be affected and both vehicles are believed to be able to have a top speed of 198 mph.

Potential Rivaling Models

The prospect of getting a 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster marks a very interesting position for the German automaker. We are certainly excited to see it in action and it would present a great addition for the market. But in terms of rivals there are not so many cars which are viewed as direct rivals. One of the potential ones is still another car which we are expecting to see made, the McLaren 570S Spider that is supposed to get its redesign very soon.

Our Thoughts

Maybe the news about the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster really appearing does not sound that much promising. They did not release a really confident statement and it is something which puts us off of really seeing this model appear. But there is still a bit of a possibility to see this car made. Mercedes is always expanding its lineup and since the AMG GT roster of their vehicles has already expanded so much, there would also be a place for the GT R Roadster to be added as well. So keep a look out as they will probably start making more serious claims about the car soon.
