Launched three years ago, the Peugeot nameplate has gained quite a substantial following. Most of its fans quote its competitive running costs, classy interior, large trunk, and affordable sticker as some of the reasons why it makes a great buy. As of February, half a million units had already been sold globally. Not everything was a bed of roses for the Peugeot 2008. Its so-so ride quality, and odd looks made it receive a fair share of criticism. All these flaws have however been fixed by Peugeot, at least according to their announcement.

Beneath the hood, the refreshed Peugeot 2008 comes with either a 1.6L four-cylinder diesel or a 1.2L three-cylinder engine. The two engines now replace the 1.6L and 1.4L mills offered for the previous models. The upgraded 1.2L inline-3 engine provides power ranging from 81 horsepower to around 128 horsepower while the 1.6L diesel HDi option also offers three outputs ranging from just 74 ponies to 120 horsepower.

Arch rivals include Nissan Juke and Renault Captur. Having been introduced six years ago, the Nissan Juke is the oldest of the bunch. It derives its power from a range of four cylinder engines that offer anything ranging from 93 ponies to around 187 horsepower. The top-of-the-line Nissan Juke Nismo gets a decent 197 horsepower from the available 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Captur, on the other side, is built on the same principles of fuel efficiency and affordability. It gets its power from a range of gasoline and diesel powertrains that offer it anything ranging from 89 to around 114 horsepower.

Pricing details aren’t available yet, however, rumors allege that the new model will cost significantly more than the model it is replacing. As such, buyers should expect to get a price hike from the current $19,120 in the U.K.

The exterior design is attractive and dynamic. It is wave-shaped courtesy of the styling approach that continues from the grille to the roof. Some of the changes on the exterior include aggressive up front thanks to the redesigned headlamps. The grille has a new design that replaces the horizontal sluts with vertical chrome inserts. Lettering of the “Peugeot” and lion emblem have been moved from the hood of the engine. Around back, the taillights get lion claw-like LED pattern. But that is as far as changes on the back go.

Some of the available features for the new 2017 Peugeot 2008 GT Line include gloss black elements, seventeen-inch wheels, and “GT Line” badges and red “Peugeot” lettering on the tailgate and fenders.

The changes to the interior are mild but nonetheless welcome. Technologies and features available include a panoramic sunroof, backlit headlining, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 7-inch touchscreen with MirrorLink and Apple CarPlay integration.

Under the hood of the Peugeot are several engines: an upgraded 1.2L three-cylinder petrol engine is available with three flavors rated at 81, 110, and 128 horsepower. On the diesel front, there’s the 1.6L HDi engine available with also three outputs – 74, 99, and 118 horsepower.

Offered beneath the hood of the top-of-the-line Peugeot 3008 GT 2017 is a 2.0L diesel engine that pairs to a six-speed automatic gearbox to deliver 178 horsepower to the wheels. Although details are yet to be offered, it is highly speculated that it’ll take around 9 seconds for a 0-60 mph. GT Line models, on the other hand, will be offered with several petrol and diesel engines and a choice of automatic and manual gearboxes.

Rivals for the Peugeot include Kia Sportage, Renault Kadjar, and Nissan Qashqai. With over 25,000 models sold as at 2016, and a new model on the horizons, the Kia Sportage remains one rival that the Peugeot 3008 wouldn’t want to upset. Although seeming gawky in pictures, Kia’s design elements have come to mature over time, and now features beautifully-sculpted design cues that make it stand out among the rest. It’ll be interesting to see how the two face off in terms of sales figures. But if you ask me, I’d put my money on the 2017 Peugeot 3008 in a heartbeat!

Pricing is yet to be announced. Rumors however say the new model will go for sale for slightly above the current model’s sticker price of 20,000 pounds. Its release date has been set for January 2017. You can however start placing an order in November 2016.

The exterior design is distinctive, rich and seems successfully executed. Even at standstill, it evokes a sense of a strong character thanks to its well-thought out silhouette that includes large wheels, a high waist line, a long flat bonnet, a vertical front end, wide protective bands, shaped roof bars, and a raised ground clearance.
