2017 Scion FR-S -Release Date, Review and Specs

With its fun to drive character, comfortable front seats, good fuel efficiency, a well-balanced chassis, and an outstanding steering, the new 2017 Scion FR-S is one the most appealing and attainable small performance cars sold today. Its release date should be expected mid-next year.

Although the small sport coupe is a small niche in the United States, shoppers looking for a peppy performance, nimble handling, and good looks in a small package should find time to check out the 2017 FR-S. The two-door FR-S is a back-to-basics, lightweight, sports cars that offers plenty of value for any serious buyer.

One compelling attribute that we have found on the FR-S vs. Subaru BRZ, which seems to be its only direct rival, is in its driving dynamics. It zips and turns nimbly with minimum effort. And yet it’s not as intimidating as rear-wheel, high-horsepower coupes. Throw in a combined fuel consumption rating of 25 mpg with the six-speed manual or 28 mpg combined with the six-speed automatic transmission and you get yourself one of the best sports coupes ever created.

Although it is undoubtedly a supercar with a performance worth coveting, there are some drawbacks to owning an FR-S. For instance, the base engine lacks the low-end oomph that you’ll probably get with rivals with larger engines. Also, the FR-S seems to suffer from wind, tire, and road noise at relative top speeds, and the way it responds to road impacts is a bit insubstantial.

Therefore, it would be considered wise to look at other alternatives first before committing to the FR-S. Some of the direct rivals include the 2017 Subaru BRZ Roadster. The BRZ, relative to the FR-S, offers a brisker acceleration but compares similarly in other respects.

Another solid option would be the 2017 Nissan 370Z. It is fun to drive and steers with precision, but its window sticker might prove daunting. Others in the same league include the 2017 Mini Cooper S, the 2017 VW GTI, and the 2017 Ford Focus ST sedan.

By offering a two-door body, a competitive price tag, a 2+2 seating layout, and sporty, RWD driving dynamics, the new 2017 Scion FR-S plunks itself into a segment it is almost guaranteed to triumph over. It’s an elemental and stylish standout that gives you a great driving experience. It’s a worthy buy!

We haven’t tested the automatic-equipped 2017 Scion FR-S, but the manual-equipped version sprinted from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds. That is faster vs. the Subaru BRZ with an automatic transmission, which accelerates from 0-60 mph in 7.9 seconds.

2017 Scion Tc – Release Date and Review

Thanks to a quick acceleration, lots of standard features, reclining and spacious rear seats with easy ingress and egress, and a sporty character inside out, the new 2017 Scion Tc is a fascinating and alluring choice. Its release date should be expected in the latter half of 2017.

In order to invigorate a corporate image that had unfortunately become stodgy, Toyota created the Scion brand to add some pizazz. And guess what! Scion has pretty much achieved its goal by offering a competitively priced and rejuvenated Tc model, which also apparently has lots of room for added customization.

The two-door Scion Tc may not be the snappiest model available in the entire Scion lineup but it it’s a capable coupe with ample appeal. It’s fun to drive nature and sporty looks are sure to make headlines pretty soon, but what remains as one of the most compelling and appealing pro is its value for the money.

Once seated on its supportive and comfortable seats, you’ll notice the 7-inch touchscreen display that offers a plethora of control, convenience and entertainment functions. There are features such as Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, an eight-speaker Pioneer sound system, and a panoramic sunroof across the entire lineup.

The only downside that seems to be a lingering sore spot on the Tc is its mediocre fuel economy rating. With EPA projections of 26 mpg combined, it is a disappointment so to speak. Others in the segment are much fuel-thriftier.

The cargo area offers a respectable volume, as its interior room which also furthers the case for the Tc. Away from the bells and whistles, if the 2017 Scion Tc has an Achilles’ heel it would be its lack of overall appeal. There is significant wind and road noise at highway speeds and the interior spaces are rather cheap compared to other offerings. Others include firmer suspension tuning and seats and a limited rearward visibility.

Hopefully, the segment offers a plethora of viable alternatives such as the funky 2017 Hyundai Veloster, the comfort, performance, and value-oriented 2017 Kia Forte Koup,  and the upscale 2017 VW Beetle. Also, you could check out the 2017 Honda Civic coupe.

2017 Scion iM – Release Date, Specs & Info

Although the new 2017 Scion iM comes laden with many features, its shortcomings in comfort, performance, and convenience are too hard to overlook. Other compact hatchbacks are better choices. Its release date should be expected early 2017, at least for the United States market and later elsewhere.

2017 Scion iM exterior, side view, alloy wheels

The new Scion iM offers a composed and comfortable ride, abundant standard features, a free scheduled maintenance, and supportive front seats. Unlike the previous iM, a closer inspection of the new model furthers your appeal. It looks and feels sharp, comes with lots of interior accessories, and returns favorable fuel economy ratings.

2017 Scion iM rear view, blue color, taillights and tailpipe

Just as its styling suggests, it is now more exciting and engaging to drive than ever, although the performance oomph is noticeable absent. In fact, it is one of the slowest in the segment. We however recommend it for urban-dwelling singles or young couples in need of a daily commuter that can also handle an odd weekend road trip.

2017 Scion iM front view, white color, headlights and grille

The cabin comes with plenty of spaces to store smaller items and drinks although its overall cargo carrying ability is largely underwhelming. The seats are comfortable and supportive and are better than those of Corolla and other competitors. They are also noteworthy for their lateral and long-distance support. In overall, the iM delivers a comfortable ride without being overly soft or wallowy.

2017 Scion iM side angle, red color, alloy wheels

Another upside associated with owning the iM is its two years of free initial schedule maintenance. This is an unheard phenomena especially for economy class vehicles. You will also realize that the vehicle offers more accessories and standard features than most of its rivals. In the end, though, the iM suffers lots of setbacks such as a class-worst acceleration, a smaller-than-average cargo volume, a limited rear visibility, and a less engaging drivability relative to its rivals.

2017 Scion iM rear view, yellow color, taillights and tailpipe

As such, we think you might be better off opting for other entrants in the compact hatchback and sedan segment. One of our top picks in the segment is the 2017 Mazda 3. Following closely is the 2017 VW Golf. It is highly refined and is as good as hatchbacks can get. Other solid choices, although to lesser degrees, include the 2017 Kia Forte 5 and the 2017 Ford Focus. We highly recommend the above options, and you should only consider the iM if you’re darn sure that’s what you want.

Offered Trims – Scion iM

Similarly to most Scion models, the iM is a five-passenger hatchback available in only a single, well-appointed trim model.

Standard accessories and features available include a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, Aha streaming Internet radio, a 60/40-split folding rear seats, automatic dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry and ignition, 17-inch alloy wheels, power-folding heated mirrors, LED running lights, a six-speaker sound system, a 7-inch touchscreen interface, a rearview camera, full power accessories, and adaptive cruise control.

2017 Scion iM front angle, headlights and grille

Standalone options include performance upgrades from Toyota Racing Development (lowered springs, stiffer sway bars, and an air filter). Others include various sport body enhancements, an interior ambient lighting, and a navigation system.

2017 Scion iM Engine Specs

Under the hood of the 2017 Scion iM is a four-cylinder 1.8L engine rated at 137 horsepower and 126 lbs. ft. of torque. A standard six-cylinder manual or an optional Continuously Variable Transmission then forwards the power to the front wheels.

2017 Scion iM engine

Test drives conducted have all revealed it will take you 10 seconds to saunter from 0-60 mph. this alone is enough reason to dissuade many people from buying the iM. This acceleration makes it the slowest vehicle in the segment.

Fuel economy according to EPA stands at 27/36/31 mpg in the city/highway/combined with the manual, and 28/37/32 mpg with the CVT. The ratings are good, but other rivals post even thriftier figures.

2017 Scion iM Release date

We should expected its release date sometime early 2017, if the rumors going round are from well-informed sources. As for its price, the same sources allege a base MSRP starting from $18,460.
