2017 Scion iM – Release Date, Specs & Info

Although the new 2017 Scion iM comes laden with many features, its shortcomings in comfort, performance, and convenience are too hard to overlook. Other compact hatchbacks are better choices. Its release date should be expected early 2017, at least for the United States market and later elsewhere.

The new Scion iM offers a composed and comfortable ride, abundant standard features, a free scheduled maintenance, and supportive front seats. Unlike the previous iM, a closer inspection of the new model furthers your appeal. It looks and feels sharp, comes with lots of interior accessories, and returns favorable fuel economy ratings.

Just as its styling suggests, it is now more exciting and engaging to drive than ever, although the performance oomph is noticeable absent. In fact, it is one of the slowest in the segment. We however recommend it for urban-dwelling singles or young couples in need of a daily commuter that can also handle an odd weekend road trip.

The cabin comes with plenty of spaces to store smaller items and drinks although its overall cargo carrying ability is largely underwhelming. The seats are comfortable and supportive and are better than those of Corolla and other competitors. They are also noteworthy for their lateral and long-distance support. In overall, the iM delivers a comfortable ride without being overly soft or wallowy.

Another upside associated with owning the iM is its two years of free initial schedule maintenance. This is an unheard phenomena especially for economy class vehicles. You will also realize that the vehicle offers more accessories and standard features than most of its rivals. In the end, though, the iM suffers lots of setbacks such as a class-worst acceleration, a smaller-than-average cargo volume, a limited rear visibility, and a less engaging drivability relative to its rivals.

As such, we think you might be better off opting for other entrants in the compact hatchback and sedan segment. One of our top picks in the segment is the 2017 Mazda 3. Following closely is the 2017 VW Golf. It is highly refined and is as good as hatchbacks can get. Other solid choices, although to lesser degrees, include the 2017 Kia Forte 5 and the 2017 Ford Focus. We highly recommend the above options, and you should only consider the iM if you’re darn sure that’s what you want.

2017 Scion iM Engine Specs

Under the hood of the 2017 Scion iM is a four-cylinder 1.8L engine rated at 137 horsepower and 126 lbs. ft. of torque. A standard six-cylinder manual or an optional Continuously Variable Transmission then forwards the power to the front wheels.

Test drives conducted have all revealed it will take you 10 seconds to saunter from 0-60 mph. this alone is enough reason to dissuade many people from buying the iM. This acceleration makes it the slowest vehicle in the segment.

Fuel economy according to EPA stands at 27/36/31 mpg in the city/highway/combined with the manual, and 28/37/32 mpg with the CVT. The ratings are good, but other rivals post even thriftier figures.

Some Interesting News about a 2019 Scion FR-S Shooting Brake

It appears that we can consider a 2019 Scion FR-S Shooting Brake as a possible vehicle. Scion has already confirmed the making of their new sedan FR-S version. There is a discussion about the release date going on right now. However, they also mentioned the prospects of bringing in some new body styles for the car as well. One of them is the Shooting Brake model. This would be one of the more interesting styles and models that Scion has made.

The chief engineer of Scion, Tetsuya Tada, said that the prospect of designing this car is going to allow for people with larger families to be able to move about. It will give more room and certainly much more convenience than a usual kind of a car.

“This car needs to be developed,” Tada said.” It is the only way for me to move my dogs around,” he jokingly said about the prospect of the car. But in truth, if you have a lot of members that you need to move all at once the Shooting Brake could offer you the necessary characteristics you need to do so.

There are only rumors about this car. So, we cannot expect confirmations nor any solid evidence to state when they are going to make the car. It is an idea which could produce something much bigger than it is now. Nevertheless, as it looks like, there is a very big possibility that we do not make it to a production model at all. If the concept or a working model satisfies the needs of the customers, they may just decide to make this car and give us more to hope for.

Possible Design

Since the 2019 Scion FR-S Shooting Brake does not exist for now, we turned towards the offered renderings. So we decided to play a guessing game about what we could possibly get. The basis for the car is of course the Scion FR-S sport coupe model. But the Shooting Brake will increase the size by 70 mm compared to the existing version and stretch things out a bit.

The new size of the car is supposed to help the interior by improving the passenger capacity. In addition, it should be offering more space. The cargo capacity alone might jump from 243 liters to 298 liters for the car. And if we decide to put the seats down it will go even further to 1040 liters.

Also the interior will have certain additions to help the passengers feel just right. One of the possible additions is the 60/40 split bench. It could come in favor of the current fold-flat rear bench. It makes it a lot eager to pack the needed passengers that way. Moreover, it helps with improving the interior spacing as well.

Engine Type for the 2019 Scion FR-S Shooting Brake

The drivetrain choice for the 2019 Scion FR-S Shooting Brake will most likely come to the same choice as seen in the coupe version of the FR-S model. So we are probably looking at a 2.0-liter boxer-four engine which will enable an output of 200 horses and 151 pound-feet of twist.

Therefore we are expecting at least 143 pounds of weight added for this model. The acceleration specs are going to change as well. The ones that come with a manual may speed up to 0-60 mph in 7.8 seconds. At the same time the automatic ones will achieve the same in 8.5 seconds. Top speed is set somewhere at 155 mph as estimations go.

Potential Pricing

The model does not have an official release. However, if we are to guess the price of the 2019 Scion FR-S Shooting Brake we will simply increase the current coupe model by a margin.

The manual versions will cost £26,945, while the automatic ones come to £28,445. The prices in the US will be similar to these ones. It only takes the matter of translating the price into dollars. But it is much too early to really estimate. Furthermore, the base the price on something as much of the details are unknown.

Release Date for the 2019 Scion FR-S Shooting Brake

The 2019 Scion FR-S Shooting Brake is still an idea and not really a real product. The designers from Scion may only be joking now. Yet, if they get serious the Shooting Brake may just be built and produced. For now we are looking at it as a potential vehicle which might get to be made, but if it does it will certainly not be earlier than 2019.

We might get it even later than that. All in all, the 2019 Scion FR-S Shooting Brake still does not exists and the prospect of getting a production vehicle is possible but we shall see how likely it gets to be.

2017 Scion FR-S -Release Date, Review and Specs

With its fun to drive character, comfortable front seats, good fuel efficiency, a well-balanced chassis, and an outstanding steering, the new 2017 Scion FR-S is one the most appealing and attainable small performance cars sold today. Its release date should be expected mid-next year.

Although the small sport coupe is a small niche in the United States, shoppers looking for a peppy performance, nimble handling, and good looks in a small package should find time to check out the 2017 FR-S. The two-door FR-S is a back-to-basics, lightweight, sports cars that offers plenty of value for any serious buyer.

2017 Scion FR-S rear view, exterior, taillights and tailpipe

One compelling attribute that we have found on the FR-S vs. Subaru BRZ, which seems to be its only direct rival, is in its driving dynamics. It zips and turns nimbly with minimum effort. And yet it’s not as intimidating as rear-wheel, high-horsepower coupes. Throw in a combined fuel consumption rating of 25 mpg with the six-speed manual or 28 mpg combined with the six-speed automatic transmission and you get yourself one of the best sports coupes ever created.

2017 Scion FR-S front angle, headlights and grille

Although it is undoubtedly a supercar with a performance worth coveting, there are some drawbacks to owning an FR-S. For instance, the base engine lacks the low-end oomph that you’ll probably get with rivals with larger engines. Also, the FR-S seems to suffer from wind, tire, and road noise at relative top speeds, and the way it responds to road impacts is a bit insubstantial.

Therefore, it would be considered wise to look at other alternatives first before committing to the FR-S. Some of the direct rivals include the 2017 Subaru BRZ Roadster. The BRZ, relative to the FR-S, offers a brisker acceleration but compares similarly in other respects.

Another solid option would be the 2017 Nissan 370Z. It is fun to drive and steers with precision, but its window sticker might prove daunting. Others in the same league include the 2017 Mini Cooper S, the 2017 VW GTI, and the 2017 Ford Focus ST sedan.

By offering a two-door body, a competitive price tag, a 2+2 seating layout, and sporty, RWD driving dynamics, the new 2017 Scion FR-S plunks itself into a segment it is almost guaranteed to triumph over. It’s an elemental and stylish standout that gives you a great driving experience. It’s a worthy buy!

2017 Scion FR-S Engine Specifications

Under the hood of the redesigned 2017 Scion FR-S is a horizontally opposed four-cylinder 2.0L engine rated at 200 horsepower and 151 lbs. ft. of torque. The engine can be mated to either the optional six-speed automatic with paddle shifters and rev-matched downshifts or the standard six-speed manual transmission system.

2017 Scion FR-S engine

We haven’t tested the automatic-equipped 2017 Scion FR-S, but the manual-equipped version sprinted from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds. That is faster vs. the Subaru BRZ with an automatic transmission, which accelerates from 0-60 mph in 7.9 seconds.

EPA says the six-speed manual 2017 Scion FR-S should be expected to return 22/30/25 mpg on the highway/city/combined, and 25/34/28 mpg with the automatic.

Price & 2017 Scion FR-S Release Date

2017 Scion FR-S Release date

The new 2017 Scion FR-S should be expected in the middle of 2017. As for the price, buyers should expect a based MSRP starting from $25,305.

In overall, the FR-S does a decent job in long distance highway cruising from a practical standpoint. It certainly isn’t serene at higher cruising speeds, but it is also not loud, exactly.
