With a new improved interior space, new style, and a safety feature galore, the new Volvo XC90 2017 has undoubtedly been reborn into a fresh and desirable SUV. The 2017 XC90 redesign marks the first ever comprehensive makeover since its debut twelve years ago. And naturally, that has made the first model ancient by conventional standards. Most brands redesign their models every five years on average. Volvo has long been noted for its understated style and advanced safety features, however, the industry has evolved and the previously–acknowledged strengths have been overshadowed by other brands who have perfected their technologies.

Nonetheless, the new 2017 Volvo XC90 has brought back its charm. The larger grille, assertive styling, slimmer headlights, and aggressive lower air intakes have all managed to give the XC90 a refreshing appeal without necessarily losing its identity.

Interior wise, Volvo has infused several upscale materials, for instance, it combines wood, leather and even Swedish crystal glass. The result is a high-luxury feel cabin that makes any driving experience a memorable one.

A new four-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged engine does the magic under its hood. You can expect an output of 316 horsepower, which is impressive in comparison to what its traditional rivals offer. Also, Volvo has been making news lately about its plug-in hybrid model that Volvo says will make upwards of 394 hp. And despite the fuel economy ratings lacking, it is expected to offer the best ratings better than any other seven-passenger SUV.

Anyone shopping in the seven-passenger segment will most probably come across several of its rivals, which include 2017 Buick Enclave, 2017 Acura MDX, 2017 BMW X5, and 2017 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. Although the above vehicles boasts of several upscale features over the XC90, the new 2017 Volvo XC90 reinvention and revitalization gives it a refreshing appeal.

Available Trims – 2017 Volvo XC90

Review

Treading in the footprints of its 2017 Volvo XC60, Volvo is at it again only this time with the S90 sedan. It is an all-new model that now takes the place of the outgoing S80 Sedan. With flared rear and sharply styled front end quarters, at least going by the concept cues and spy photos, should cut a rather aggressive figure than its predecessor. After all, it is set to compete with the top dogs of this segment such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, and the Audi A6.

Although it won’t be an easy walk in the park, the new Volvo S90 2017 is also a top contender in this class with features such as glacial Swedish looks, an electric hybrid option, and a classy interior. The only disappointing idiosyncrasy seems to be its ailing fuel economy ratings relative to the competition.

Beneath the hood, the new model borrows heavily from the XC90 SUV. Although the output figures are yet to be confirmed, Volvo says all the mills will revolve around the 2.0L four-cylinder unit and the sedan will come with D4 and D5 diesel drivetrains, T6 and T5 gasoline engine, and the T8 hybrid. The European will have the D4, D5, T6, and T8 options while the T5, T8, and T6 will be available here in the U.S. expect the T5 to churn out 254 horsepower, the T6 around 316 horsepower, D4 – 194 horsepower, D5 – 225 horses, and the T8 Hybrid around 400 horsepower. All these powertrains will be hitched to an eight-speed automatic transmission system. The AWD is an option.

2017 Volvo S90 Redesign of Interior & Exterior

The 2017 Volvo S90 interior comes with mild redesigns with some changes been made on the door panels and dashboard. The latter now features larger wood inserts and is a bit slimmer than before. Just like the XC90, the new S90 also features the Sensus Connect touchscreen interface. In fact, the instrument cluster, the steering wheel, and the center console all appear to have the same design as that of the 2017 XC90. The exterior design has also seen some changes, too. Its dimensions, for example, have grown a bit. It is now 4.3” longer, 4.1” longer wheelbase, and 1.1” wider than before. It’s no wonder the new model is sleeker, and more upscale than the outgoing model.

Once available, the new S90 will compete against other heavyweights such as the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and the Audi A6.

New 2017 Volvo S80 Release Date and Review

With great fuel economy ratings, plenty of value for the money, and comfortable seats and ride, the 2017 Volvo S80 seems as a sensible alternative to flashier, more expensive luxury sedans. However, it disappoints with its lackluster power, and anonymous looks. The Volvo S80 release date should be expected sometime in the second half of 2017.

2017 Volvo S80 exterior, white color

While the S80 is appealing in certain ways, it’s least appealing relative to contemporary luxury sedans that are notorious for fancy wheel designs, high-tech infotainments system, supple leather and interior woodwork. Its aging design and minor updates for 2017 only makes the situation worse.

On the upside, though, the Volvo S80 2017 offers impressive fuel economy ratings and an array of high-tech safety systems. Elevating its performance and efficiency is its new turbocharged four-cylinder engine that cranks out 240 hp and 258 lbs. ft. of torque, and offers an incredible 0-60 mph acceleration in 6.6 seconds.

2017 Volvo S80 side angle, black color

The exterior design, while it isn’t a bad thing, has only received mild cosmetic freshening, and seems rather dated in today’s luxury car market. The interior layout is however quite appealing and upscale. The materials used on its surfaces look premium, and the infotainment system has improved responsiveness relative to the previous model.

Yet, the new Volvo S80 isn’t the only vehicle in its class that offers plenty of value for the money. Rivals you should check out include the Acura TLX, Hyundai Genesis, Lexus ES 350, Buick LaCrosse, and Cadillac XTS. Pricier alternatives include the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, and the Audi A6.

While the Volvo S80 does come pretty well equipped and is typically less expensive than many other midsize luxury cars, the reality is that it’s simply outclassed for 2017.
